Take care of your digestive system
Fibre rich food aids digestion

Digestion involves converting the food we eat into fuel for the body. It does this by breaking down food into smaller molecules of nutrients, so they can be absorbed into the blood stream and carried around the cells in the body.

The body can then use these nutrients to build and nourish the cells and provide energy. Food is mixed with digestive juices as it moves through the digestive tract, breaking down large molecules to smaller ones.

Digestion begins in the mouth, when you chew and swallow your food, and is completed in the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed. The body excretes what it doesn’t need. It is vital to maintain a good digestive system as we age, as it tends to become less effective. This means, it becomes even more important to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

HOW IS FOOD DIGESTED?

You can help your digestive system by drinking water and eating a healthy diet that includes foods rich in fibre, which aid movement through the digestive system. High fibre foods include: fruits and vegetables, wholegrains, beans and lentils.

WHAT FOODS ARE GOOD FOR HEALTHY DIGESTION?

Drink a glass of water with every meal to assist digestion. Chew your food well before swallowing to aid the digestion process.

By eating a diet high in protein and complex carbohydrates, you may find you stay fuller for longer and have sustained energy levels, compared to eating sugary carbohydrates and foods high in fat.
