Contestants gear up for the games
Opening ceremony

The second edition of the Cape Town Corporate Games welcomed 47 organisations that proudly participated in multiple sport disciplines from 6 to 9 June 2013.

The Cape Town Corporate Games weekend featured 15 sports at selected venues throughout Cape Town, including the official host venue, V&A Waterfront, and supporting venues of Kenilworth Karting, Rondebosch Golf Club and Western Province Cricket Club to name a few.

Over the Games weekend, 73 sporting events took place and 572 first-, second- and third-place medals were awarded to the winners. The official licence holder of Corporate Games South Africa, 3rd South Africa, is delighted with the success of this year's Games weekend and has received wonderful feedback.

The Corporate Games have welcomed the return of some of the largest businesses in the country including Sanlam, which won the Medallist Award, DIvision 7 Award and the Sport Championship Awards for netball, running and table tennis.

The Sport for Life Grand Award was presented to Tsogo Sun Hotels for entering the most athletes into this year's Games. This award recognises the achievement of a very special organisation whose management and staff have responded to the challenge of sport, fitness and morale in the workplace.

Friday boasted a fantastic day weather-wise for the golf, in which players got to enjoy many a 'wet hole' from the various sponsors. The day finished just after sunset, with the South African Police Service (SAPS) emerging victorious.

Action cricket was hotly contested in both the men's and mixed teams, with Metropolitan Life walking away as the victor.

While badminton was well supported this year, the SAPS presented a dominating performance.

Dragon boat racing hosted the largest field out of all the sports, with an electrifying atmosphere on both days. Planet Fitness stole the show and paddled its way to the trophy.

Karting saw a very large contingent battle it out on the twisty circuit, with Allan Gray proving to have more pace on the day.

Lawn bowls had a very intense and competitive field chasing the top honours, with the SAPS once again scooping the overall win.

Mountain biking, which is new to the sporting codes, saw the Union Cycliste Internationale discipline of cross-country course racing proving popular – especially among the spectators. The V&A Waterfront peddled away from the rest of the competition.

With a last-minute venue change due to the heavy downpour on Saturday, the netball heated up the venue of UCT with some fast-paced games – and Sanlam came out on top.

Many of the runners were thankful for the move to a sunny Sunday, especially Sanlam, as its team members sprinted their way to victory.

Soccer is setting itself up as the flagship event of Cape Town Corporate Games, with some tough games and noisy supporters. After the bitterness of defeat last year, Airports Company South Africa made amends this year to finally hoist the trophy.

Soccer 5’s held an impressive 30-team tournament with some tough competition. Tsogo Sun fought its way to the top of the pack.

The SAPS kept the competition on their toes as it scooped more honours in squash.

Some incredible table tennis was on display, with Sanlam proving to be just that much better on the day. Another new sport added to the list was tag rugby, which hosted a small but enjoyable field; Aggreko crossed the try line the most and finished as victor.

Tenpin bowling saw a very large number of teams enter, including the event's first disabled athlete. Tsogo Sun bowled over the competition.

Across the multi-sport weekend of the Cape Town Corporate Games, colleagues, friends, clients and the local community enjoyed a festival of corporate competition, camaraderie, fitness and fun.
