Local experts have confirmed that mental health remains a major challenge in South Africa.

More than 17 million people in the country are dealing with mental health issues including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, schizophrenia and substance abuse.

South African Depression and Anxiety Group's (Sadag) operations director, Cassey Chambers says, "It's so difficult when you looking at mental illness versus other illnesses. With mental illness it’s so much difficult because you can’t see that someone has a mental illness.

What we find as the biggest problem is our access to mental health resources in our country."

"Lacking of funding is also one of the challenges. Less than four percent goes to the budget of mental hospitals therefore we have very few hospitals specialized units.

About 75% with mental illness will not get the treatment that they need," adds Chambers.

In the next edition of Leaders in Wellness we will be featuring mental health and the effect it has on your bottom line.
